Hello, long time no see guys. But, I am back here!
How are you guys there? Hope you doing well. I hope you have a nice day, and during this pandemic, please stay safe and healthy.
Yesterday, I read a good article from BBC Future. The title is “ The way to cut your food’s climate emissions” By Sarah Bridle. The page starts with a question “Can the contents of your next meal really make a difference to climate change?”. Okay, let us open up our minds and think about this, do our meals have an impact on climate change?
Honestly, before I read that article I knew that food waste is a number one problem to climate change. But, I did not know that the contents of our meals also matter. For example, two different dinner options, steak with fries and a microwaved potato with beans, have a different scale of impact. The steak dinner is over 20 times worse for the climate than the beans. It is interesting, I think that most people do not care about this and maybe they do not know about this issue. So, my hope is after reading this article, we are not just thinking about the impact of our meals on our body but also on our climate. It is really good to know.
I will give you a quick summary of the article, here it is:
Not all foods are equal when it comes to causing climate change. Like I have said before, steak and beans, have a different impact. Choosing to eat more vegetables is also matters because 5% of calories eaten by a cow are burped again as methane, which is a powerful greenhouse gas. Between consuming a local fruit and a fruit that transporting from another region, they also have a different impact. And how about choosing plant-based meat rather than animal protein? exactly that also has a big impact.
Food waste is bad and I think it is the worst. Why? Because the wasted food also releases methane, the same as the burp of cows. Also, food waste is the worst because just imagine someone outside your home (homeless) that do not have anything to eat. Just being respectful and be wise about what we eat and how we eat. Some tips can help you to avoid food waste like meal planning, refrigerating and freezing, eating leftovers, and measuring out quantities carefully. Meal planning can also lower your budget!
Some advice from the article:
Start focusing on the foods you regularly eat, that cause the most climate change.
Adding more lots of climate-friendly foods into your diet. Less meat and more plans!
But, I start to think about this more and more, why do a lot of people do not care and know about this issue? I think, when this problem comes to developing countries, we are facing a different problem. Many of them, still can not provide nutritious meals to their diet, even they are still struggling to fulfill their basic needs to get nutritious food. So, how can they be sensitive about this issue when they still have to struggle to get sufficient food to survive?
